<descript>
The UNH CCOM/JHC Historical Geophysical Database developed for this study is relatively large (and entirely from existing sources). Nevertheless, the coverage is somewhat inconsistent in quality and distribution. The surveys were conducted on the NH continental shelf from the early 1970s until 2015 by a number of investigators from UNH. Although the archived database is relatively large, the coverage is somewhat inconsistent in quality and distribution. In addition, the positioning uncertainty of the station locations varies over an order of magnitude and is estimated for each sample (uncertainty category key is given below). Also, the distribution of sample locations is uneven. The most recent studies which have the most accurate positioning and the highest quality data tend to be concentrated in specific areas and not evenly distributed as would be expected. This product is a series of shapefiles containing grain size analysis results from over 40 years of studies conducted by or in collaboration with the University of New Hampshire. Position Uncertainty Categories:
Category 1: GNSS – Corrected with RTK or Postprocessing: Less than 30 m
Category 2: GNSS – Without corrections: 30 m to 50 m
Category 3: Loran C: 185 m to 463 m
Category 4: Radar, Charts, and Dead Reckoning: 250 to 1000 m
</abstract>
<purpose>One of the overarching goals of the Cooperative Agreement between the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/ Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC), and the New Hampshire Geological Survey (NHGS) is to delineate and map potential sand and gravel deposits on the New Hampshire shelf. This task can only be accomplished with extensive ground truth information. This GIS formatted database is a primary resource for any surficial sediments or geologic mapping effort.</purpose>
<supplinf>The individual student theses and other collaborative research efforts conducted by the University of New Hampshire are the primary source of information for this database. The development of the "Surficial Geology of the Continental Shelf off New Hampshire: Morphologic Features and Surficial Sediments" report, maps, and all related databases were supported by BOEM Award Number M14ACOOO10 and UNH/NOAA Joint Hydrographic Center Award Number NA15NOS4000200. A number of colleagues at the University of New Hampshire Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center provided scientific and technical support, advice, and insight including Paul Johnson (Data Management), Colleen Mitchell (Graphics Design and Editing), Will Fessenden (IT Group), and Larry Mayer, Giuseppe Masetti, Michael Bogonko, and Erin Nagel (Faculty and Research Scientists).
